The UrbanPromise Gospel Choir began in Camden, N.J. over twenty years ago under the direction of Mr. Cleveland Johnson who believed that the message of love that gospel music shares was powerful enough to penetrate through the thick, overwhelming presence of negativity and oppression that is deep rooted in the City of Camden. Over the years, Mr. Johnson, along with wife, Martha Johnson have dedicated their personal time to UrbanPromise StreetLeaders, leading choir tours at major U.S. cities (such as, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, and more), and touring internationally to Mexico, Canada, and the U.K. Some choir members have even toured Jerusalem with 3,000 other fellow Americans to celebrate the birthday of Jerusalem in song. As choir members sing across the globe, spreading God’s message of love and forgiveness to all whom their voices reach, they experience transformation that develops their own personal spiritual growth.
Recently, the UrbanPromise Gospel Choir has taken up residency in Trenton, NJ. They practice weekly at the main site of UrbanPromise Trenton located at 801 West State Street at Trinity Cathedral. It is the belief of Executive Director, Carl Clark that the power of God’s love and the spiritual nourishment that the gospel choir offers can transcend the challenges of Trenton’s youth, as it has with the youth of Camden.
